Dollar Store Rosebud Wreath

The Inspire My Creativity link up theme for this month is “Dollar Store Crafts”.  I started early, stopping by the dollar store to see what treasures I could come up with.  I have to admit that it was a little difficult this time.  Most of the ideas I came up with consisted of the majority of the items NOT from the dollar store, or Valentine’s crafts (today being Valentine’s Day I decided against those). Then I came across these foam wreaths, and thought, ‘there’s got to be something I can do with these’. They’re sturdy and better quality than most dollar store stuff.  I didn’t really like the flowers they had so I went on searching, wishing they had fabric to make my own flowers.  Instead I came across the crepe paper streamers in the party section and a vision of this rosebud wreath came to mind.

Items Needed:

  1. 1 Green Foam Wreath
  2. 1 package crepe paper streamers
  3. 1 package burlap ribbon
  4. gluegun/gluesticks

This is a great rainy/snowy day project.  Find a binge worthy Netflix show and settle in.  This wreath took me about 3 1/2 hrs to make.  You will make MANY of these rosebuds and glue them onto the wreath as close as you can get them, even overlapping sometimes, so that you can’t see any of the green. No need to cover the backside, of course, you want it to be fairly flat so that it will hang well. Here is a picture of the back of mine.

I made the rosebuds by wadding up a small ball of crepe paper streamer, then twisting as I continued wrapping around that ball…twist and wrap, twist and wrap.  You can dab a little glue here and there along the way to keep it from popping apart.  I found that the rose looks prettier if you do this process very loose.  You will not want to make them all the same size.  Different sizes are necessary in order to fit them all close together. Choose which side of the flower looks better and put hot glue on the opposite side.  Then attach to wreath.  I noticed if I let the glue cool slightly, it wouldn’t  melt the wreath. See this video if you are having a hard time understanding what I am talking about.

Once you are done making and gluing your hundreds of roses (just kidding, it’s probably not that many), all you have to do is cut about 20ish inches of burlap ribbon, put one end through the middle of the wreath and tie a knot at the end of the ribbon. Now find somewhere great to hang it, use it at a wedding or baby shower, use it in your holiday decor.  I love how this cute little wreath turned out  for only $3 plus glue sticks (which I also found at the dollar store).  I may have to make more in other colors.

Now that is a clever use of dollar store materials! I was shocked to find faux flower petals at one and was able to make cute crafts with them. I need to try your rose technique, though, because your wreath is SO pretty!

Thank you Marie. There are so many ways to make flowers, right? This is definitely a cheap way to go and you would never know that it all came from the dollar store.

Thank you Christine! I wasn’t quite sure how it would turn out with crepe paper, but they ended up looking good. I want to try another color since these make me think of toilet paper LOL.
