Unicorn Party with Free Printables

Unicorns are all the rage these days – I had so many ideas for this party but I love when things come together and I haven’t gone overboard! I wanted a Unicorn Party that was simple yet memorable for my daughter and her friends, and I think that we accomplished that! They were all having so much fun and did not want to leave, so we ended up texting all the moms to ask to stay an extra hour!

As the girls walked in they were all given one of these unicorn headbands to wear, and the girls just loved them. I saw lots of DIY tutorials for these, but when I found these on AliExpress for less than a dollar, it was a no brainer for me that I would save myself time and money by just buying them. It can take about two weeks to arrive (although ours came in a week), they did send the wrong color, but they were still cute so it was no big deal!

When the girls arrived they were helping me to make a rainbow backdrop out of streamers for a photo booth. It was fun to see them all work together while all the guests arrived. We did Little Caesars pizza for dinner, superfood salad from Costco (you just mix all the ingredients together so it was super simple) and pink lemonade with frozen berries in these fun milk bottles for a drink. Fun straws make me happy, and these ones did not dissolve as many of the paper straws do – I got them at Walmart in the party section.

While the girls played Pictionary on a large white board, I was prepping things for the girls to make slime to add to these fun jars we made as a take home gift. I was super nervous this was going to be a bad idea, but it turned out just fine. Making slime is one of my daughter’s favorite things (along with the rest of the world) so I knew it would be a hit!

I just lined up the cups on the table and made my own little production line. I added the glue and half a cup of water to each cup so it was ready to go. I also measured 8 cups warm water along with 8 tsp of Borax and allowed that to dissolve.

For each container of slime you need:

  • 10 0z cup
  • 4 oz of elmers glue
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 plastic spoon
  • 1 tsp borax
  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring

I had the girls line up and one by one I put the food coloring in (the color of their choice) – about 8 drops total. I had them take their cups back to the table and stir the coloring into the glue and water.

Then I walked around the table and added 1 cup of warm water with the dissolved borax in it. I have a large measuring bowl of 8 cups, so it was easy to measure 1 cup out for each girl. As soon as that is added, the reaction is almost instant and it begins to thicken up. They stirred for a minute more and they were able to dump any excess water in the sink. Once that was done the dirty part begins. We had a plastic table cloth on the table so they could pull out the slime and mix it with their hands. It seems super slimy at first, but with more mixing it thickens up and is no longer sticky. Clean up was a breeze – just pull off the table cloth and throw it in the trash, and the girls just washed their hands.

Then they all went and chose their jar for their slime. I think they turned out super cute! I knew I had been saving jars in my garage for all this time for some reason!

You can use really any jar, but these are the ones I had – one of the styles is from a salsa jar, the other is from Lingonberry sauce from Ikea (we love to make their meatballs at home!) I allowed the jars to soak over night in soapy water (I use Dawn) to help release the labels from the glass. I still had to use a lot of elbow grease to get the labels stickiness completely off, but we got them done!

I bought these unicorns from Amazon – other websites had the same ones for a bit less but then charged me $13.95 shipping making them cost 4 times as much – I will take Amazon thank you very much!

Spray painting them was probably the most frustrating part of the whole party. I used some plastic gloves and went to town to paint them, hands getting sticky and what not. I tried to spray them standing up, but the air blast from the spray paint just knocked them over. I ended up spraying them two different days to get a good even coat on them. The lids were easy, I just placed them on top of a paper cup to avoid having to touch them while I sprayed and that did the trick!

I used E6000 to glue the horses on the lids and it worked great. I just reminded the girls when they open their jar not to open it by the unicorn.

I just loved how they turned out and the girls did too! When you put the slime in the jars it can make a bit of a flatulence sound and the girls thought that was hilarious!

Next we had a dance party! I turned on Pandora kids station and cranked the music – many of their favorites are sung by Kidz Bop and they loved that. After a while I began taking requests of specific songs, and they started doing karaoke – at this point they didn’t want to move on and that’s why we texted parents for more time. I think being with friends and music is energizing – everyone moving and lots of positive energy in the room!

After the girls were tuckerd out and getting hungry,  we did the piñata  – kids love hitting them and love the loot! Isn’t this piñata amazing?! My mother in law has made my kids piñatas since forever and they always turn out so great! She always says “At least my grand-kids will remember me for the piñatas I make!”  – yes they will, and so will all the kids at their parties! We opened presents and its always fun to see what gifts people think will be perfect for you.

I liked how the table set up turned out, I think the only thing I wished I had was a happy birthday sign. I was looking for just the right one and never found it.

After they got all their goodies in their bags we sang happy birthday. My daughter is not a fan of cake (she definitely got that from her dad), but I had to buy one cupcake to stick the candles in! They sell individual ones at the Walmart bakery so that worked out great!

This is her “cake” every single year. Chocolate Almond Balls, super simple, happy, little balls of chocolate goodness – did I mention they are no bake? My sister Elisa shared the recipe on our blog a few years back you can find them HERE.

We also had chocolate dipped oreos…

and chocolate dipped pretzels. Now these were supposed to be unicorn horns – you roll out a caramel (like when you play with play dough and make a snake) and wrap it around the pretzel rod before you dip it in chocolate, making it look like a unicorn horn. My Mama brain forgot and dipped them all in the chocolate and realized it too late, oh well, they were still yummy!

These rainbow fruit kabobs were one of the favorites – one of the girls kept telling me she was so glad I had some healthy food to eat!

We also had some savory – tillamook cheese and ritz crackers or some wavy potato chips.

I liked the “treat”  spread we had rather than cake and ice cream – 9 times out of 10 I always find barely eaten slices of cake and melted ice cream after the party, and I think that there was something for everyone when it came to flavors and taste, and after all the dancing and singing they had a bit of an appetite!

Here are the FREE printables I made – my daughter was so happy with them! We put them in frames and now they go perfect in her room!

We sent the girls home with their slime they made, the unicorn jar, the headband, a cute bag with their piñata loot (which I forgot to take a pic of) and a copy of this “Be a unicorn in a field of horses” to hang on their wall or mirror. I like sending home things that hopefully wont get thrown in the garbage in a day ;).

All in all this was one of my favorite parties so far. The girls were old enough that I didn’t need to plan every single second with lots of games, and honestly, the dance party and karaoke were perfect for them! It made my daughter happy that he friends didn’t want to leave and they all went away happy!

What is something you do to simplify your kids parties?

See the Happy!
